I came up with that name. The idea is that the Colle-Koltanowski needs a "rebirth," and this variation is extremely rare currently. The "Phoenix" is a mythological creature that burns up and re-arises from its own ashes.

I'm suggesting that Colle Players put 9.e4 "on the burn pile" so that the Colle System gets a new life.
